The Board of Directors and International Advisory Board of the Hispanic Society of New York visit Pazo de La Cuesta

Pazo de La Cuesta, the oldest family winery in Galicia dating back to 1608, located in San Clodio de Ribas de Sil, has experienced this Sunday, May 4, a historic day: the visit of the board of directors and the international advisory council of the Hispanic Society Museum and Library of New York.

Among the 28 guests, there were important personalities such as the president of the Hispanic Society, Mark Rosenberg; the director and CEO of the Hispanic Society, Guillaume Kientz; the former U.S. ambassador to Spain under Obama, James Costos; the former president of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, Emily Rafferty; the renowned international strategist Juan Verde; and the mayor of Ribas de Sil, Roberto Castro.

The Folkloric Group Lembranza Solpor de Celanova, formed by bagpipes, drums, and tambourines, and the guitarist from Lugo, Sergio Franqueira, were in charge of welcoming the guests at the entrance of the estate and accompanying them from the Batanero gate through the fruit trees walk to the pazo where an aperitif and lunch were served, paired with wines from Pazo de La Cuesta, prepared by the well-known Berso Restaurant, located in Sober (Lugo).

After lunch, enlivened by the guitarist Sergio Franqueira from Lugo, they visited the estate, the old mill and bread oven, and were able to see the old cellar of the sixteenth century, known as “A Cova”, and where the top wines of the winery rest.

The owner of Pazo de La Cuesta and member of the International Advisory Board of the Hispanic Society Museum and Library, Manuel Bellod Álvarez de Lorenzana, has highlighted the great success of this day where the board of directors of the famous New York museum has been able to live and enjoy, in first person, the pazo, its estate and the gastronomy and traditional culture of Galicia.

For his part, the mayor of Ribas de Sil, Roberto Castro, said: “Pazo de la Cuesta has always been a place of reference for our municipality. These visits are of vital importance for us. They give us a lot of visibility and boost tourism in the area”.

PAZO DE LA CUESTA: THE OLDEST FAMILY WINERY IN GALICIA

Since 2020, Pazo de La Cuesta, located in Ribas de Sil, has been immersed in a renovation and recovery project of its historic vineyard and the restoration of the primitive 16th-century winery. The oldest family winery in Galicia has belonged to the same family since its foundation and it has been Manuel Bellod Álvarez de Lorenzana, who is part of the fourteenth generation, the one in charge of starting this initiative assuming the commitment to return the prestige of yesteryear to the pazo, its vineyard and its wines.
