SINCE 1608

Pazo de la Cuesta,
Galicia’s oldest family winery

Pazo de la Cuesta has been closely linked to vines and winemaking since at least 1608, when Captain Álvaro de Losada y Somoza’s inheritance of the house, the chapel, the wine cellar, and the vineyard is documented.

A 21st century viticultural project

Deeply rooted in the history of Ribeira Sacra

Pazo de La Cuesta has been intrinsically linked to vines since at least 1608, the year in which Captain Álvaro de Losada y Somoza’s inheritance of the property was documented, including the chapel, the wine cellar, and the vineyards.

The original wine cellar, dating back to the 16th century, which is currently undergoing restoration, holds casks and vats that are probably as old as the building itself.

El Pazo’s wine business experienced decades of glory in the 19th century when Manuel Batanero Montenegro took over the wine cellar.

The first wine from Northern Spain to bear a label came from the vines of Pazo de la Cuesta.

Château La Côte, Vino Higiénico de Mesa Añejo del Castillo y Granja de la Cuesta, Vino Tostado Añejo del Palacio y Granja de la Cuesta, and even a cider labelled Sidra del Palacio y Granja de la Cuesta are just a few of the commercial names that can be seen in El Pazo’s historic wine collection, dating from 1874 to 1934.

Award-winning Burgundy-style creations that have received national and international recognition.

The family’s commitment, passed down from generation to generation, has allowed us to maintain this legacy.

Our vineyard

Pazo de La Cuesta has undertaken the challenge of recovering the spirit of excellence of this historic vineyard, which is part of the living heritage of Galicia.

Our vines have an average age of 40 years and a little over two hectares of the estate are home to pre-phylloxeric vines that have survived over 150 years.

Our vineyard is divided into 11 different pagos or parcels.

We make our white and red wines with our own grapes – the only way we can ensure their exceptional quality – using native varieties such as Godello, Treixadura, Albariño, Loureira, Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera, Brancellao, Sousón, Merenzao, and Caiño among others.
